    Zipper types

    Hello All Again,
One more question about DIY hammocks, I am effectively done with my hammock with the exception of the netting. I plan on using a zipper on one side, but am not too sure which type I need. Separating, non separating? What kind do I need? Are zipper lengths cut to fit?
    Thanks,
    Dave

You have many chioces here and I don't know them all. However a seperating zipper would be if you want to remve the bugnet. The longest anyone has found is 110 inches (I think). It can't be cut and still be seperating. For a bugnet with one side sewn on and the other side has a zipper I prefer a double pull coil zipper. OWF has them plus other places. They are real helpful if you contact them. If you have a double pull you are able to open it up in the middle rather than reach above your head. The pulls have to face each other. Also make sure you get a double tab so there is a tab on the inside and outside.

That is not technically correct. A separating zipper can be cut and remain separating IF you shorten it from the top end. Treat the ends indentically to the way you would treat the ends of zipper tape. More on that in my upcoming series. However, it is likely you would not want to shorten a separation zipper if you using it for a bugnet attachment. It is even more likely that you find 110" too short for that kind of application.

Some people have gone as low as a #3 zipper if they are gram weenies. My preference would be a #5 zipper tape with a couple double tabbed sllders
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

What they both said. Also my 2 cents. Stay away from cheap zippers, only buy YKK. I get zipper tape (coil zipper on a roll) from Rockywoods.com. I installed a #5 for my HHUB.
