5 nights in the smokies, first Hammock test

Thought I would share a couple pictures of a trip my brother and I spent in the North Carolina side of the Smoky Mountains. We both got new hammocks for Xmas and this was our first big trip with them.

I got the Deep Jungle Long and my brother got the Explorer Deluxe. We both made it through a couple good rain storms without any major issues.

Would like to thank everyone from the forum for all the great information that we successfully used during our hammock setup and testing during our 5 nights stay in the backcountry. One of the best ideas that we used was using a separate line for the Tarp. We feel this was important for our success with the rains.

I hope I included the pictures correctly as this is my first time trying to attach an image.

    Thanks again

Glad everything worked out. Your setup looks good. Looks nice where you are also.

Tell us more about the trip:

    mileage?
    Places-overlook, falls, clearings, stream crossings...etc
    Crowded?
    Temperatures?

    Give us the gory details!

    Gory Details

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I will try a couple "Gory" details that you might find fun and interesting.

We started our 6 day 5 night trip at the North Carolina Fontana Lake Marina where we rented a 25 min boat ride to the backside of Fontana lake. The 25 min boat ride took us to the start of Hazel Creek trailhead that goes about 17 miles up to the AT getting close to 4500 feet. At the Marina you sign the clipboard and tell them what time and day you want pick up.

Besides trying our Hammocks out our main purpose was to spend the week Fly Fishing for Wild Brook, Brown and Rainbow trout in the mountain streams. These backcountry fly fishing trips what got my brother and myself interested in hammocks.

You might enjoy the story about the first picture i included in the above report with my brother setting up his hammock when we arrived at our campsite the first evening. We had been informed that rains were moving in that first night so we hurried to setup camp and get ready for the rains. This was the first time my brother and I had ever setup our hammocks but had spent a considerable amount of time reading and studying hammock setup. As everyone already knows studing and reading is not the same as doing so we where somewhat unsure of our setups.

In the first picture above you can see my brother finishing his hammock setup and i remember him talking about how great a site that was. OK here is a picture of the same site the morning after the rains.

You notice my brothers Hammock is not there anymore, LOL. about 3:00 in the morning my brother came and woke me up to help him move his hammock to higher grounds during the rainstorm, You got to love it, Only a brother.

Since we were so high in alt the waters cleared quickly and we had a great time fishing and camping in our new Hammocks even after the rains.

We never saw another person for 6 days , what a trip. It will take a week or two at work to recover from having this much fun.

One last Picture I hope it comes out.

    Thanks everyone.

In hammocking as in real estate I guess it really is "LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION" Thanks for the info. Looks like you had fun. Nice meal of trout.

I may get out for a "hang" on Wednesday...I 'm helping my buddy set up his 35 foot trailer in a park that night. If it warms up I may try out my hammock. It is still only 3*C here in Newfoundland today.

    Take care,
    Bluefin
