I was delighted to find this site as I am retired and planning to get back into some backpacking. I did one easy overnight last fall with tent and light pad. It was uncomfortable to say the least. I do have better pads. Then I found hammock forums. I read and read and read. I absorbed an enormus amount of information. I read lots on what type of hammock was best or best for me. Soon I was confused, I kept reading, even commenting some. I had a cpl ideas on which hammock to purchase. I have scottish ancestery and am kinda cheap so diy appealed to me. I didn't and maybe still dont know the difference between gathered end and whipped and the advantages of each. I saw a video on gathered end, bought some material at ww and made a hammock. I played with straps and ring etc for quite awhile. I also made a 9x10 tarp. I had most of an old misquito netting that hangs from 4 corners and I used that to make a square bug net. I have since added a bottom cause it wasn't quite big enough and 2 zippers to close it. I don't have pictures of the completed bug net yet. I also have made a pluq that is good to about 48 degrees. My hammock is 2 layer and I have played with ccf pads on colder nites. They are kind of a pain. I have insultex ordered. I also have material for another hammock and tarp.
This has been quite the learning experience as well as fun time. I have hung and slept in the hammock in the basement and the yard.
I would like to take this oppurtunity to thank all the fine folks who put so much info and videos on this site. There is a wealth of information here. I will not attempt to name names cause I would miss some. This is a great site with great ppl. Now I shall try to post some pictures. It looks like the pics are attached. There is the hammock under the tarp, the tarp back, the bugnet, and even me with the white beard.
