I have one of Brian's early MacCat's, it has a cat cut ridge. It is true to say that, although the tarp works fine and it is very quiet, there is a reduction in headroom. I usually pitch it very tight on the ridge and then tension the tieouts, this flattens the ridge a little and helps with the headroom. All in all it has been a first class tarp and is lasting very well.

I didn't think the MacCat's ridgeline was cat cut. I know my BlackCat isn't, but I don't have one of Brian's to be able to directly compare. That's good to know, thanks.

The most recent ones are not cat cut on the ridgeline. nobanjo14 indicated his was an 'early model', perhaps while Brian's design was still being changed.

youngblood (designer of the speer SPE & the snugfit quilt) told me that after spending time w/ his tarp that has a cat cut ridge line last winter, he did indeed have problems & concerns about snow building up on the near flat top during the night.

he said he had to keep knocking it off every once in a while. he was afraid if he slept the whole night through, it might collapse on him

i had already decided against the cat cut ridge line though because of the reduced head room.

less head room, plus higher ends to allow for te possibility of incoming rain. JMO

    All great info!

    Hadn't thought about snow loading....

Also looks like the depth of the cuts is shallower on the Mac photos...

if you tighten the end pull tabs last, the ridgeline will not sag down as much as you see in the photo. it's set to give more side coverage in the pic. the ridge is only a 1 1/4" cat cut.

angrysparrow is right, my Mac cat tarp is an early one, maybe 3 years old now. It is still a very good tarp and it has had a lot of use, I'm very happy with it. Thanks Brian
