    Thru Hiker Kits

I am interested in a DIY down insulator from Thruhiker. I'd like to make it myself. Its the Whitney jacket, right?

I feel as though I can collect the materials cheaper on my own than what is contained in a kit.

I have two questions - Has anyone used a kit, and if so might I be able to buy the pattern from you?

Second, what would you think about combining Momentum 90, a layer of insultex and then 800 fill down?

    Thanks for the imput!!

I have read a bit about some folks that have used the Tru-hiker kits and most agree that buying the materials separate is rarely cheaper, Ayce has about as good of price on his materials as any place else, and is the only shop for name brand Momentum. I would be a bit hesitant to use IX in a jacket, getting it to drape and contour to all of the curves and get the Air gap that IX needs would be a huge amount of work. Not impossible but a lot of work for a jacket. JMHO

I agree with you - I am not set on that idea at all,

    I was thinking

Outer shell - insultex - down - inner shell

I'd happily ditch that idea, though.

Thanks for the input, maybe I should stick with the program.

    IX compressing down..

I wouldn't put anything other than featherweight fabrics that might compress the down on the outside of a jacket myself, but that's just me. The IX might degrade moisture transfer also, which isn't a good thing for the down.
