    Advice??? AT Segment Hike

I'm hearing a lot of talk about folks thru hiking or taking AT segment hikes. I'm trying to pull together a segment hike for my son (14) and I either this summer or next. I'm trying to choose a segment that would be a fun place to start, since we haven't done the AT before, and something we could pull off in a week or so.

I don't see us being experienced enough to attempt a thru-hike, but we'd like to take it a step at a time (no pun intended).

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

The national parks are awesome. Shenandoah’s have great services. The Smokies are great also. Lots of wildlife in those 2. The whites are really awesome and the 100 mile wilderness in Maine is so remote and beautiful. For something like a long weekend you can't go wrong with Mt Rogers area.

    Right on!

I second the Shenandoahs. Lots of critters, beautiful country, fairly easy hiking, and LOTS of food!

A lot of things to consider when coming that far to the trail. Are you driving or flying? Are you planning a full 7 days of hiking or 5 days plus a day on each end to get organized and shuttled out to the trail and back, etc. These may dictate a few places that would work more effectively for your trip, i.e., needing a shuttle at each end of hike, shipping packs ahead to an outfitter, nearest airport, etc.
AND, how fit will you be at the start? A bunch of big ups and downs for a week may cut your total distance to less than you really want to do.
My 2 cents worth: try and pick a 50 or 60 mile segment with a town/resupply point near the middle. This keeps your food weight down to 3 days for each segment and lets you enjoy a moderate daily mileage. For mid-June to early July, I like Roan Mtn Tennessee, Mt Rogers, Va, or Shenandoah NP.

Yeah, I used to live there. Apart from it's smallmouth fishing, it both sucks and blows.

Standing Indian is a good place to create loop hikes and it's off the beaten path compared to places like SNP and GSMNP.

If you are a hammocker, the Smokies AT is not a good choice. It's a shelter-bound area requiring reservations for each night.

My advice would be start at Mt. Rogers National Recreation Center HQ and hike the AT south through Grayson Highlands to Damascus. Wonderfully cooler temps than much of the southern AT that time of year. Also, it's easy to park in Damascus and get a shuttle to MR HQ.
