Michele, I was doing a little sewing today and had something similar happen when my bobbin had too much thread in it. Might be something to look at.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

since i started making some of my own gear a year or so ago, i been using my mama`s old sewing mach that i got out of the basement & had cleaned & tuned.
sometimes it did OK, but a lot of the time it gave me problems.
last week i asked my friend Donna, who is a seamstress to help me again because the old mach was acting up again.
she said, well, this is as good a time as any & gave me an early Christmas present.
it was a kenmore 385. 15343 sewing mach!!!
MAN!!! she even came over the next night & helped me get started w/ the right tension & everything!
it`s a pretty inexpensive model, but it seems to do all i need it to. it`s working great!
it runs like... like a sewing machine!

I have two machines - an old White similar to what Jeff mentioned and an Elna with all the bells and whitsles. The older machine can handle heavy fabrics and multiple layers with ease. The fancy machine does better with thin fabrics and knits (has the special stitches for knits).
As Jeff mentioned, good thread is worth every penny. I also buy name brand needles (as headchange4u mentioned) as the cheap ones break and don't hold their points as well.
I just got my mom's Elnasuper up and running again. It's a great machine. Now all I need to do is learn how to use it. Unfortunately, she's not around anymore and I really didn't pay attention the first time she taught me how to run back in the 70's. But at least I'm not afraid to jump in!

Well I think I finally killed my 20+ year old Sear's Kenmore machine. I was sewing the sleeping bag from SG I ordered into a topquilt and it stopped working. The motor still goes, but the needle does not move up or down. Anyone have any ideas or know how I can fix it. I am planning on taking the cover off and see what I find.
On a good note, my mom just bought a new machine and I have already called dibbs on her old one which I will pick up tomorrow. So the sewing will go on. On another good note I now have a 50 degree top quilt (which I think I could go lower in the hammock) for a total cost of $33 and weighing in at 15 oz. I'll start a thread with directions after Christmas.
After modifying it I think it would be pretty easy to mod a sleeping bag into an underquilt. I am going to try that if I can get ahold of a cheap synethic bag rated into the 30's.
