    Double Hanging Success!

I've been struggling to figure out how my oldest son and I could hang together under one tarp. I thought I needed to figure out how before purchasing more equipment but I was going about it backwards.

A local boy scout troop invited my son and myself on a trip last weekend. This was our first opportunity to try a double hang and I stumbled onto a $60 hammock that I thought would get us going. It's a parachute type material without a ridgeline that I bought from Trek Light Gear. I think it weighs about a pound and it worked great. My son was thrilled to have a hammock and he slept soundly through the night and was the last one up in the morning! I'll add a suspension system like some I've seen in Shug's videos and I'll add a ridgeline too. I took a big blue tarp which worked but I've got some more playing around to figure out exactly what I'll need.

This trip was an amazing success. We canoed to an island on a local lake, camped overnight and canoed out the next day. My son and I have camped a lot together but never with hammocks. This was his first time in a canoe too. He loved every bit of it. So did I. Also he has decided which Boy Scout Troop he will be joining next year.

I actually got 3 under our tarp in like manner last weekend.
Me in the middle, Low and as far to the hed end of the tarp as possible. The two boys above, and toward the foot just a little bit. We all were connected to the same tre hugger on the head end, and had 3 different tree huggers on the foot end (big tree, 1 hugger comming off each side and mine in the middle.)

I have a gg12x12 tarp so it is pretty big for everyone to fit in.

    Good times!

He's talking about the Guide Gear 12'x12' tarp that used to be available for $20. It's out of stock right now. May or may not come back in stock. It's always come back before, but the gravy train has to end eventually.

The link about it is here: Guide Gear 12x12 tarp - $20

Go to message #49 in that thread for links on the Chinook tarps which are also inexpensive although not quite as much of a steal as the Guide Gear. If you're looking for huge it's hard beat the Chinook 12'x14 for $32.

When you're doing a double hang, don't forget that you can also hang from just two trees if they're further apart. Put each head towards a different tree and let the feet overlap a bit. Get the right hang and you end up being able to lounge in the hammocks facing each other.

Congrats on a great hang - my fiance and I almost always hang both of us under one tarp, usually using three trees. It works great and gives you a similar feeling to sharing a tent, but without the sore back and knees in the morning

Those Trek Light hammocks are pretty nice, aren't they? They are made locally here in Colorado, just a short drive from where I live. Similar quality to the ENO hammocks sold at REI, but you get to support an eco-friendly small business that manufactures in the USA. Gotta love that.

I know you've been thinking about this for a while. Glad you had a successful trip. Next time I go with you, don't expect me to hang under the same tarp as you.

At that price I really wasn't sure about the quality. So far I've been pleased. We will see how long it lasts. I have no reason to doubt it but at that price it doesn't have to last long to have been worth it! Their customer service is superb. I found them and ordered it about a week from my trip. A day later I got an email that they were out of town and couldn't ship till the following week but would send it overnight at their expense so I would have it in time for the weekend. Where do we experience customer service like that these days??
