    Waterproof Ripstop Nylon Breathable?

    Hello All.
I'm new here and tlo the concept of hammock camping, but I really excited about the whole idea of being able to sleep almost anywhere.
But I'm afraid I may have mcked up my first hammock.
Is the non silicon waterproof 1.9oz ripstop nylon I've bought for my first hammock breathable?
And does it really need to be?

Welcome, if what you have is Silnylon it is not breathable and it really should be for a hammock bed. Make an "O" with your thumb and index finger, lay the material over it, put your mouth to it and try as hard as you can to blow thru it. If you cannot blow thru it at all it is Silnylon or some coated material. If you can, however so slightly, blow thru the material it is probably DWR, which means it has a Durable Water Repellent coating but is slightly breathable. This is suitable for a hammock as well as uncoated 1.9 ripstop nylon. If your hammock is not breathable it will be like laying in a sweat bath. I hope this is helpful and welcome again to the forum.

Thank you for the info, and the Welcome

It appears to be non breathable so I'll use it as a Garlington Insulator lol

I think that I'm going to have trouble finding non coated Ripstop here, Can you suggest any alternatives?

welcome to HF nudgeworth. stoikurt is right on w/ his reply.
there are several resources that you can order 1.9 fabric (untreated or DWR treated) that would work great for a hammock.
    one is speer hammocks http://www.speerhammocks.com/
if you go to jeff's web page, you will find other resources for fabrics. ...tim

Hammock bottoms and their bottom insulation systems are normally a whole lot more comfortable if they are breathable.

Problem solved, i found someone with a roll of uncoated 1.9 Ripstop It could be the only roll in the city lol. It's uncolored, so it will look like I'm in a cocoon Heheh

Though it will cost me quite a bit more than the almost legendary Walmart $1 bin ripstop. You fella's in the USA are so lucky

Also I was hanging in the coated ripstop this afternoon, I made some adjustments to the Whipping, then put it up again at Dusk and listening to bird's sing and watched the stars come out.
I really would have liked to stay there tonight lol

i'm glad things are working out. maybe that uncolored cloth will just blend into the back ground.
it's nice just laying there in the hammock listening to the birds sing isn't it.

You can dye the nylon yourself... Look up acid dyes online...

Or if they sell regular "all purpose" dye in NZ then you can use it.

Just mix the dye with water as directed, add a cup of vinegar or so and heat in a stainless steel, or enamelled pot to a low simmer. Add the nylon fabric, and let steep for 20-30 minutes. Longer will give deeper colour as will more dye in the water.

DON"T use a pot you want to eat out of later. and don't use an Aluminum pot as it will react with the dye and vinegar. Many dyes use nasty chemicals that may contaminate the pot beyond washability and its not worth the risk to get heavy metal poisoning or similar. And its also best done out of doors.
