    Dual foam camp mat

OK, I'm ALSO waiting for my WBBB 1.7 DL to arrive, and I'm starting to think about under insulation. Since I camp in areas where I may have to go to the ground I don't think an underquilt will ultimately work for me, so I was wondering how well a dual foam camp mat (in between the layers) would work.

Unlike CCF I don't think the dual foams are a vapor barrier so I'm guessing they would breathe, and since they're basically a sleeping mat I could take them to the ground if I had to...

Does anyone have any experience using these between the layers?

I'm not sure what you mean by "dual foam", but if there's any open cell foam involved there will be a bulkiness penalty as well as issues with it holding moisture like a sponge. For us Texans (more so here down south), we can get by with less insulation under us most of the year. Although I haven't tried it yet, gossamer gear sells a very ultra-light closed cell foam (ccf) pad that's only 1/8" or so. Should be adequate in between the layers down into the 50's (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please). Another option for semi cool weather is one of the reflecting windshield shades (about $3-4 at walmart). Insultex (IX) underquilt or just a raw piece between the layers is another option. One or two folks on the forum sell it. I haven't tried any... YET! It sounds pretty effective and light weight.

I was referring to the basic dual foam camp mats you find at Campmor... Here's a pic...

OOPS! I guess I read over the part about going to the ground...

When that's the case I take a Thermarest Z-lite pad. It is ccf, but folds down like an accordion and is surprisingly comfy on the ground.

What kind of temps can you get down to with the z-rest...? Maybe if I double up, etc...?

That's what I was thinking you were talking about.

Isn't it ccf on the bottom and open cell on top?

Just brainstorming, but I wonder if an inflatable pad might work. It wouldn't need to be inflated in the hammock, but would provide an extra layer that would help some in cool weather. If you need to go to the ground, just blow it up. Much more comfy than ccf, even the z-lite, on the ground.

I don't do a lot of cold weather backpacking, (hell, there isn't much cold weather in south central Texas anyway! lol) but I've been good down around the mid 50's with the Z-lite and a down bag.

Could be. I'll have to check. I have a Exped Downmat and SPE, but the stinking downmat takes 10 mins to blow up with the compression bag so it effectively negates the time savings I get in setting up my hammock.

I love it's comfort but it takes forever to get blown up... and you can't use your breath because it will create mildew...

I'm surprised it takes so long to blow up the downmat. When I was using mine regularly, I got pretty efficient at blowing it up reasonably quickly. I ditched it more for the weight and bulk penalty than ease of setup.

Well, the weight is definitely an issue also...
