    First Rain Set-Up - Failure

After reading the advice on this forum for some time now, I decided to take the local experts advice and test my system and setup techniques before taking off on a trip. The recent steady rains on the Gulf Coast provided a great opportunity to see if I could stay dry. My initial set-up ended in failure. The hammock got soaked on one end.

My second set-up was better but still ended in a damp hammock. I readjusted the tarp, tarp angle, tarp ridgeline, placement of drip lines, etc. to try and eliminate the dampness.

Finally on my third try of adjusting my set-up I was able to keep the hammock dry in a fairly heavy downpour with gusty winds.

Even though I watched a lot of videos on how-to on this forum, until you actually set it up under real weather conditions you are not going to really know how it will hold up until you try it out...for real.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for the videos and expert advice in their post. I now feel I can at least stay dry and make the best out of a bad situation if need be.

Good to test your gear and your abilities to improvise. Thanks for sharing.

What size tarp were you using?

I was using an 11 x 9.5 that I picked up from Harbor Freight. I have a WBBB and a Superfly ordered from Brandon, but needed something to get me by for an upcoming trip. Once I got the set up right, the tarp worked great.

Was any of your wet ... coming down your hammock suspension? Did you have some kind of drip break ... either rings or drip lines to keep the flow of water down the suspension from reaching your hammock? Just a thought.

No, I had no water from the suspension lines as I had biners and drip lines to act as breaks. The problem was from my tarp ridgeline that ran under the tarp. Even though I had a drip line on it, the line itself got soaked and dripped on the hammock. I was using paracord as the ridgeline.

In my initial set-up I had a slight angle on the tarp ridgeline. After I made the ridgline completely level, then the water didn't run downhill which caused the dripping under the tarp and on to my hammock ends.

Next time I will try with the ridgeline above the tarp, however I like the extra support with it underneath. I have a one piece ridgeline ordered from Opie. Maybe the difference in line material will help make a difference as well.

Yeah paracord ... can wick through it's core ... just a thought ... move that line above the tarp and eliminate the problem. That's what I do ... or you can go end to tree only.

I've always loved using paracord but it can soak up the water!

Thanks again for your videos. It was your advice that prompted me to set up and check my gear before leaving he house.

    Y'elcome ..... I admire those that practice!
Yeah .... get rid of the under the tarp line and all will be high and dry. Or put drip strings on that ridgeline. Cool. Out. Clear for take-off.........
