Our "Life from Outside the Box" Blog (or wintering in a wall tent) -pics

Not hammock related (yet), but gives a good idea of our family adventure. My wife Beth started this blog while we were wintering in our wall tent with two kids, and trying to save up for land.

We (mostly wife) wrote some good articles, and took a bunch of pics.

The tent (12x20 Alaknak) and kitchen was from Cabelas, and the bed and crib was from IKEA. Maybe a little nuts to some, striking out in the dead of winter, but it was better than the home we were just in that was heavily damaged by a 4' snow roof slide. On and off, we have lived over a year in wall tents.

As for hammock hanging, I don't think the walls are that strong, but it did keep some serious winds at bay.

Now that's pretty cool! I think I would like that
It would be another investment & take some planning, but building a stand for multiple hammocks would strengthen the tent in high winds (by going wall to wall) & save room during the day by hanging both ends of the hammocks on the walls.
Of course you'd need under quilts for the hammocks, but you could always sell the beds

Note for thought... top rails on the hammock stands (above head high) would add storage possibilities.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Very cool - I've always dreamed of doing something similar but never had the gumption to actually do it. I'll be reading through all the old entries with great interest.

It's a lot of gear to haul (hence the trailer), but for long term stays, I would take it over an RV any day. It's about a two hour setup, and three hour breakdown.

The only way I think it could be pulled off is....

1- at least 1 foot square steel plates under the poles to avoid sinking.
    2- MUCH beefier poles.
    3- MUCH beefier rope.
4- Auger style dog screws in ground.
5- A big fat Marley blunt to take the edge off of the whole group. (optional - if you fail and destroy a $1000 wall tent, at least you won't care).

Just more food for thought... Ed Speer & others use a self supporting hammock stand for two that rests on horizontal pipe sections, so it can be set up in the sand or anywhere. No anchors needed.
Nice & strong. It's put together w/ two pipe wrenches & the needed elbows, tees, etc.
I think he uses about 1.5" pipe, but I can't remember for sure now. I or someone should be able to find more info & pictures just a better idea.

Here's one picture of it taken by neo.

Notice the hammock ends go to the same pole on the end the picture was taken from, but they go to two separate poles on the other end.
A lot of folks use this three point set up for two hammocks by finding the right tree trees.
