    Arrrrgggg Amsteel!!

OK, I've got my Amsteel and I've started making my WS. I've got 1/8" Amsteel-Blue (color is black) from West Marine. I started to taper my end and noticed it's only 8-strands. Is this right? The West Marine website says it's breaking strength is 2500# but doesn't say how many strands it has. I thought 1/8" was supposed to be 12 strand.

That was my understanding, as well. Is it possible you've got 7/64" by mistake? That's 8-strand, as I recall from posts here on the forum...

    1/8 is 12 strand and 7/64 is 8 strand.

If you paid for 1/8 I'd go back and get a refund for the difference in price.

7/64ths holds alot, I am living testimonial to that! Strong stuff. I hang on it all the time.

If you got it, use it...or take it back. But it does work.

at about 260 I built a bridge hammock with 7/64 amsteel. I had knots slip when I didn't tie them exactly right (not a problem with whoopies) but I never had a line actually break.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I probably can't return it because I've already cut it. And I trust what y'all are saying. My biggest problem is that West Marine has jerked me around a bit on this, mainly on delivery. They told me it'd be ready at a certain date. Well, it got lost in their system and they said they'd overnight it. Then when I went to get it they told me it'd be on the truck for the next week. Now that I finally have it, it's the wrong stuff but they charged me for the 1/8". So, at the very least I'm going to complain to them and request a refund of the difference of the price which is about $8. This just isn't rubbing me the right way so far on their customer service.

    Thanks for letting me vent

    Thumbs down

I ordered some from west marine and after 3 weeks I canceled it. Guy in the store told me he submitted the order but they never sent it.

Not that it helps but I can certainly vouch for Redden Marine. I had a piddly diddly lame order. called them up, can't remember who I talked to but gave them the order for 100' of some red 7/64th. "wouldn't happen to be one of those hammock fellahs would ya?" I said I was "Good! Good! had some good camping this year?"

After that kind of service I'll never go somewhere else even if it means paying a premium against a cheaper competitor.
