Smile Create my Linville Gorge 4-5 day loop

    Hello to all of HF,

I have been considering many trips for my week off in July. I have considered the following:

AT / BT Loop 55 miles
Loop in the smokies around 40 miles
Linville Gorge Loop (not made yet)

Heres my predicament. The AT/BT loop appears to be not so much a wilderness experience, with a powerplant, roads, and at least on the AT section, walking on roads and whatnot. When i go into the great outdoors, i always seek a wilderness experience. In addition to this, the trip is a bit long for my little brother who will be taking his first hike with me. I don't want to push him.

So the Linville gorge seems to offer everything i want as well, yet more remote, more serene. I need you gorge rats to recommend me loops. Im not aware of any shuttles that can be utilized in the gorge, if you are, let me know.

    Create my Linville gorge loop!

Loop must be less than 40 miles in total. Thanks everybody.

8 miles a day in the gorge is doable right fellas? been reading about it, seems like hard hikin. I guess my main concern is lack of trail signage. I've read online and seen in shugs videos that on occasions in the gorge, a sock, a pan, or a white rope can be your guide. Maybe i should cut down the distance to allow for being lost?

My first suggestion my friend is that if don't want to "push your little brother", do plan on less miles per day
The gorge can offer some pretty strenuous hiking. Plus, as you mentioned, there will be times to stop & study the map & make sure you stay w/ the intended trails.
If you hike further in a day than you thought you might, there's always stuff to explore.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

I will take it down to 30 mile then, thats 6 a day, is that reasonable for the gorge slowhike? Looking at the toography, its gonna be up down up down up down, so im sure your right.

Just curious, are there swimmin holes in the gorge?

We're looking forward to it too pal ... if you post your trip maybe some of us can meet you somewhere for a day. Go to Ken's website and read ... there's a bunch of loops laid out there or reported on. I'd not be so concerned with loops as areas ... and explore them. AND MORE IMPORTANT ... you need to make time for Louise's and some mighty fine pie!

You'll have a trip you're brother will thank you for ... and who knows ... might become an annual brother thing!

    July, eh?

It was 95 degrees Fahrenheit on Shortoff this past weekend!

I'd recommend putting a car at one of the parking lots at the north end of Kistler, then enter the Gorge at the south end (Pitchin) and go north along the river. Plenty of opportunity to climb higher along the way, but if it's hot you can just stay down by the river, and go for a swim three times a day!

Don't think in miles on a Gorge trip. They don't matter and they are "as the crow flies".
Do the loop from Spence Ridge Trailhead ...make sure to take the little Table Rock trail for some up-hill fun .... continue south past Table rock on down all the way across Short-off Mountain. Cross river and head up Mountain to Sea trail. Options here: continue on up to Spence Bridge and head back up to trailhead and walk to Hawksbill. Or ..... after river crossing go 3 miles to Pinchin ....climb that to top .... head north on road a wee bit and take Rock Jock trail. I highly recommend the rock Jock. Hickery and I camped up there in a big thunder storm. There is a site between two rock cairns we made up there just past Razor Edge rock if coming from the south. Awesome spot. Two guys can find hang spots if your crafty. You will end up at Conely Cove. Go down Conely Cove Trail and go north. Don't miss Cathederal Falls. Steep short trail down to river. Hang spots there. Be careful of rising river if wet weather.
****Cross or pass Spence Bridge and head up to Babel tower. Double back. Go back up Spence Ridge Trail to trailhead. Lick wounds.
You will have a terrific time no matter where you go!!!!!!
The Gorge awaits you ikemouser. It told me so.

Good points Mac. To be honest, I usually avoid the gorge (GASP!) during the summer & look for higher ground
