    Exclamation Colorado Advisory

Just a heads-up for anybody heading to Colorado for a vacation and for those of us lucky enough to live here. The forest service has issued advisories for campers all along the front range. I can't find an actual link to give you; I saw it on the news tonight. Here is a story about the problem in general. The warning is for trees killed by the dreaded pine beetles. Many of them look very solid, but are rotten on the inside. Takes about 10 years from infestation to fell timber.

I've been up the last few weekends and it really is a sad thing to see this beautiful landscape full of brown potmarks. If you plan on hanging on a trip out here, please spend some extra time pushing on trees that you think you want to hang from and don't forget to check the surrounding trees too. Don't wanna read about any squished hangers in the news.

Man, I'm sorry to hear you've got those little bastages over there too! Another tell-tale sign is little pencil-lead-size holes in the bark.

Thanks for the heads up - considering most of the woods I've been in out here are all pine, this has the potential to be especially devastating. Real shame.

Do the holes typically go in a line parallel to the ground? I had a Bradford Pear in Alabama die, and I couldn't tell if the holes were from an infestation or woodpecker.

Yeah, Colorado has had an infestation problem for a number of years now. Views I remember when I lived here in the 90s, are dramatically different now. Hard to drive through the mountains without noticing the damage. All those lodge pole pines that could have been log cabins are just piling-up.

Mustardman- Be VERY CAREFUL if you buy any mulch. The trees that the forest service removes are piled on the sides of service roads. The timber is free for anyone who wants to take it away. There was a rash of 'tainted mulch' last year. It seems some less than honorable folks were picking-up the infested timber and mulching it. They'd sell it cheap to homeowners since it was basically free for them and then the homeowner has pine beetles in his yard and his neighbors are just tickled silly. Basically, don't buy your mulch from the back of that pick-up truck on the corner.

Nah, Pine Bark Beetle holes are much smaller, randomly across the bark.
Generally, that kind of damage (the horizontal sets of holes, generally in hardwoods) is from a bird called a Sapsucker, they poke the holes and drink the sap, hence the name.
