    Two tarps on one ridgeline

While I wait for a BDWD tarp, I have to augment my GG 10 x 10 with a 9 X 9 Kelty for bad weather. The 10 x 10 just doesn't cover the Switchback enough for my liking. I made two more prussiks with toggles and added to the line. Is this too much stress on Opie's wonderful tarp ridgeline? Do I need to make another and just string them off the same trees? See very bad drawing below.

    Cheers,
    Mary

If you are going to go to all the trouble of having two tarps, why not hang the Kelty on the diagonal to protect the hammock and then hang the GG as a super porch?
I'm assuming the desire for a porch is the reason for hanging them both rectangularly as opposed to on the diagonal.

bd, guess I wasn't very clear about pitch. I hang the tarps down to the ground a frame tent style. The GG is about 6 inches too short to cover the hammock end and protect from wicking water. My addition of the Kelty is just added rain protection working with what I have until I can get a "real" tarp. But your superporch is an intriguing idea for sure!

How about layering the Kelty on the diagonal underneath the GG? You would get extended coverage on the ends of the hammock while still being able to set the GG as an A-frame. That would prevent you having an overlapping seam that could leak over the hammock. I'm a big fan of the super porch!

Even with bd's excellent suggestion, I still have two tarps on one ridgeline. Is it too much stress for the line?

If you're using Opie's line, then two tarps won't be an issue. I forget if he's using 1.75mm or 2.2mm for those rigs, but either way, you're looking at a 450lb rated line minimum.

    M, you are fine.

You may find youll want to add another wrap to the prusiks (any or all of them) but other than that, you wont stress the line.
