    half bivy half tarp idea

has anyone tried making a bag that wraps around the feet, but then opens up over the head/torso area and is tied out like a tarp? Pretty much the same shape as a quilt. I have a HH, so I'm thinking of either velcro or a zipper along the bottom where it lines up with the hammock opening, and then maybe even extending the zipper/velcro up so that the whole thing could be sealed.
any thoughts? something I'm not thinking of?

how should I attach the foot end around the hammock rope so that its water-tight?

    Thanks

Are you trying to get away from using a tarp?

not specifically. The goals would be to have better coverage than my current stock HH tarp (which usually doesn't cover my feet all that well since I am tall/make sure my head to totally covered) and to increase the warmth a bit by having a wind barrier around the bottom half. But still have the views of a tarp and not have to deal with condensation like in a full bag.

I'm 6'3" and if the rain is blowing I usually just lower the windward side of the stock tarp. Have stayed dry so far. My underquilt stays dry too. Was raining in my avatar photo.

    wj,

I'd consider getting a larger tarp, but I may have seen something like you are describing.

There was a company -- Dancing Light Gear? -- that I don't think is around anymore. They made a ground cloth that had a footbox. It was meant to use under a tarp to keep the foot end of your sleeping bag or quilt dry in case any wind-blown precipitation found its way beneath the tarp.

I suppose you could make something like that and mount it as a weathershield under the hammock that has a footbox. But, my understanding is the hammock ends are not supposed to be exposed to rain. If they are, doesn't that mean either the tarp is pitched less than optimally or is too small?

A larger tarp seems much easier.
