    Bug Nets...

Ok, I decided to just make my own hammock, and after reading through some of the posts on the subject, I've got the measurements down on that (at least it looks mighty good on paper lol.) The only thing that's really got me baffled is how I want to attach the bug net (and believe me, I need one here.) Velcro's loud enough to wake the dead, zippers snag and are a pain to deal with in general, I'm not really too keen on the idea of a net that wraps all the way around the hammock... What else is there?

What's wrong with a net that wraps around the hammock? If you decide on a hammock with a ridgeline, it'll keep the net off your face and the net hanging below will keep bugs off from below you.

Others can tell you about which zippers are the least problematic, I'm sure there are solutions that are durable enough for hammocks.

Well, just seems like it would be an altogether pain (think getting up in the middle of the night.) Might be wonderful, but all I have to go by is the idea of it... I haven't heard much about them yet.

Yeah, mine will have a ridgeline for sure. And it's going to be a double layer, if that helps at all. Thanks for replying, by the way.

My son just made his bug net that hangs down past the hammock. I got the bug net for him at the local army navy store. He used fishing weights sewed to the end of the bug net that hangs down the side.He used 1/4 ounce on three spots down the side. Let it be understood he is 15 and sometimes looks for the easy way out. I was not impressed at first but we live in Florida where the state bird is the mosquito and it works for Him.

I hate velcro too. I usually use a double layer hammock (also necessary for the bugs here). The layers are only attached at the ends but there's no reason that you couldn't sew one side together with the bug net in between. The net can then be tucked in between the hammock layers to seal out the bugs. It works very well but takes a few more seconds to close. To me, the sound of silence is worth it.

    You could try this:

I use the same idea but with weights in both sides. It works.

or a couple of magnets sewn into the pockets will make them cling together under the hammock.. the 'rare-earth ' magnets are small and strong...just a thought. KM

I've just been letting the net hang over this side like the quarter-weight solution. I have some washers attached with safety pins to keep it from floating.

I'm getting ready to sew some edging onto it just to make it a little more sturdy. In the process, I was thinking of placing a washer on one side and magnet on the other. This should come undone very easily when I want to get out, but will be strong enough to keep the ends closed while sleeping.
