I get into tha bag, pull the hood over my head, sit in the hammock, then swivel and do the zip up.

I only do this when it windy though, most of the time, my bag gets used as a quilt too.

When I use a sleeping bag or in the summer when I use a light weight fleece bag. I leave the bottom third zipped and use them as a quilt.

I have an inexpensive mummy bag that I got a Wal-Mart a couple of years ago (SleepCell e2 with CoolVent by CellCorp - about $30.00-ish), and the best thing about it is that it zips up the center of the bag, not the sides. I just reach into my hammock, unzip it and open it up before I get in. As long as it's opened up first, I can just climb in, lay down on it and pull it around me. It says that it's rated down to 20 degrees, but that's being generous. After about 30, I'd want a fleece liner or something to help the bag out. Luckily, living in FL, we don't have too many times when the extra warmth of a heavier bag is needed.

Then I use it quilt mode, simply tucking the sides underneath me when it's cold and pulling hood over top of my head. When it's warmer out, I don't tuck the sides of my bag and I fold the hood part down inside the bag to keep it out of the way. You will need a pad or underquilt to keep warm from underneath when using it in quilt mode.
This is what I intend to do with my mummy bag.

C'mon guys, it really ain't hard if you have a proper bag, there are even people at Whiteblaze who know what a hammock sleeping bag looks like, it's called a Feathered Friends Rock Wren:

The bottom drawstring makes it all work pretty slick, even with a hennessy.

Bag as quilt has worked for me down into the lower 30's 20f bag with underquilt. In the high 40's 50's and 60'sI used the same basic bag with a pad. in the 70's it was pad alone and no top cover (but I'm used to the house being being cold in the winter and the bedroom 70f in summer).

Those things are pretty pricey. If the OP was going to spend that kind of cash on a sleeping bag, I'd imagine he'd be better off just buying a decent TQ / UQ combo instead.

Some good advice to consider - THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found a cheap parka/sleeping bag to try out. At least if it doesn't work I won't be bankrupt.

Big Agnes bags, with the integrated pad, do a pretty decent job of staying where you put them while getting situated. They have their own issues, but that ground has been well plowed before.
