Two Questions...

I'm wondering if it's safe to sew the Velcro for a bugnet directly onto a speer type hammock, or if there's another way to attach the Velcro.

And the second question. I'm thinking of spraying uncoated ripstop with DWR from a can. Has anyone tried this before? How did it turn out?
I'm planning to use it to make an overcover like Green Therapy's .

Hi Nudgeworth,

1.) I don't know why you wouldn't be able to sew velcro to the hammock body. Do you have anything specifically that you are worried about there? There are no issues there that I know about.

2.) I have no experience with spraying DWR on breatheable ripstop, so I'll defer to someone who has. Be sure to post pictures of your overcover when you're finished!

One addendum to NCPatrick's response---make sure the velcro is the "sew-on only" kind, not the kind with adhesive on the back. I've read here in the forums that folks who have mistakenly used the adhesive stuff have gummed up their sewing machines.

I've sewed a lot of the "Free Magic" velcro with no issues.

on the dwr spray... ed speers uses it on his hammock in cold weather, not only to repel water, but to increase wind resistance while maintaining breath-ability.
i use it on my insulated, winter hammock.

I'll second Grizz's coment about the adhesive on the back velcro. I tried to use some on a tent. Great mess and broken thread on the machine. Does not sew well.

There are also stiff backed velcro and very softly backed and more flexible velcro. I prefer to use the softer stuff and used it on my HH Clone.
