My prototypes are built around the standard 1-3/8" piping. The hope is that the hub and pipe will provide enough strength to prevent splay.

Thanks Gringo! I am hoping to get my prototypes tested by the first week in July. Ultimately, yes, I think I will sell them.

Sure could use a handful of these for Soulfest in early Aug. I'll probably have to build a couple of the 4x4 style hangers for that trip.

Looking forward to your pics of the real thing in action!

    Updated Illustration and Prototype Plans

I met with the welder today and he had some recommendations after reviewing the plans. The new design will be easier to prototype and also provides a connection point for the hammock and tarp.

The plan is to have a few prototypes in a week.

    Neat Idea.

Instead of the nut and bolt to secure the pipe in the stub, why not use a pin with a detent ball in the end(commonly available) these could be secured to the hub, with a small piece of 1/16th cable so they are not lost.

Just as good as a bolt, with out having the small parts to get lost. Also it looks like the braces you included to attache the hammock to might block the nut on the bottom.
    DAVE.

    The further you go,
the longer it takes to get back.

Yes, the pin idea was also recommended by the welder. The drawing isn't 100% to scale, so the braces will not cover the holes.

Thanks all for the interest. I'm getting three prototyped this week to test and hopefully a few more tweaked versions for an event on July 1-4.

And although these are a car camping commodity, I want it to be sleek, good-looking, well thought out, and reproducible. In fact, I wonder if I should add a carrying handle on the top...or maybe a tube for a flag pole...

Anyway, I'll keep you posted with the progress and when I'm ready to make mass orders.
