Hello thar! My name's Josh and I'm from SD as well (Clairemont Mesa/Linda Vista). I'm just getting into hammocking and have a WB Blackbird in the mail

Do you know of any places locally that would be good to hike + hang?

Nice, you alread have a rig on the way! I need to wrap up a few other things before I make a purchase, but research is free!

You might have already seen this site since you are in San Diego and looking for places to hike: http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/parks/pmap_google.html

Off the top of my head, I think Cuyamaca or places up on Palomar Mountain might be your best bet. If there any other San Diego locals, maybe they can chime in.

I do know of one spot out in Ocotillo Wells that has trees, but it's closed for the Summer. That would be Tamarisk Grove.

I've been up Cuyamaca but it wasn't too far of a hike. Maybe I'll just start at the border and do as much PCT as I can on a weekend and start where I left off the next time. Been to San Jacinto or Idyllwild? I've heard about them but haven't been.

I actually just received my Blackbird today =) It's a beauty!
Whoopie Slings are in the mail though..

Hey guys dont rule out the desert. I have hung over at Ft Irwin. Just need some rocks. Or find a cliff face and buy you some rock anchors(any climbing store will have some). A little work and scouting will do you good. Hang high, Hang Low, and always swing in the breeze.

    Just ordered my new hammock!

Nothing too exciting, a basic one from www.bargainoutfitters.com
    http://www.bargainoutfitters.com/net...?a=435127&pn=1

It looks like it's from a company call Grand Trunk, and from the search I did on here, people seemed to be happy with the. So I thought I would give it a shot! They are on back order, but fine with me.

This post is kind of old but I thought I would chip in. I just returned from Palomar Mountain Doane campground. I went to scout out locations and found some really nice spots. Aside from the car camp spots that offer plenty of trees for set ups, the nature trail also has some more desolate spots.
Temperatures were high 30's/low 40's at night and 68-71 in the day. I have a HH Expedition but did not get to use it because I do not have an underlayment system yet.
Overall a nice place that is real close (1 hour to spot). Highly recommend it.
Let me know if you have any questions.
