I'm feeling kind of old....lol. I picked up my first hammock in 1978 while shopping for some backpacking/hitchhiking equipment, and tired of carrying a 6-10 pound tent. It was one of those net hammocks that rolled up to the size of softball or so with yellow poly rope. Using that and a nylon poncho laid across it with my North Face bag, I hung everywhere from inside cities (outlaw hanging) to fantastic wilderness hikes in the Sierra Nevadas, as well as numerous hitchhikes across the country. Somewhere in the mid-80s, I switched to a pack-sized canvas one (old sailor-style, warmer on the bottom). Early 90s adopted the huge Mayan hammock - the ultimate in comfort imho... ) I was getting ready to switch to a homemade cordura hammock when Ed Speer's book came out and he suggested using nylon (a forehead slapper - I had always thought it would rip...shoulda tried it!) So even after watching this forum become born, and watching the fantastic ideas and innovations that have culminated, I still humbly use a simple gathered end hammock with 25 foot straps (WA state trees) and a standard 7x9 silnylon tarp... I'll probably be buried in my hammock. )
Its now just over 7 years that Sgt. Rock introduced me into the hammock world on the HikingHQ site.
It's fantastic that so many people have been converted to hammocking.
Now I go out and constantly run into other hammockers.
It's been great going down this rabbit hole.

Haven't at all, yet, outside of the occasional few minutes in a poolside hammock. I've ordered a Traveler to hopefully reduce some of the back problems I'm having with my quarters bed.

Used a green nylon net cheep thing with a sleeping bag growing up.
most of the time Id use the bag to lay on to keep off the netting.
20 some odd years, wow

About six years ago I bought an Eddie Bauer (do they even have Eddie Bauer anymore?) heavy blaze orange some-kinda-poly hammock. Wasn't really backpack worthy but I sure did love it. We had some nice car camping together.
Now why can't I remember how long ago I discovered Hammock Forums?
Edit: Oh yeah duh. Join date is on the left. Nice.
Over three years now; and your website musings and a guy I met on the trail one day were the inspirations for me to get started.
Thanks for that BTW......

The road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with weary feet, Until it joins some larger way, Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.
