I seem to remember that Consumer's Reports once recommended dish wash detergent as an alternative to Woolite. Never tried it, but it seems that Dawn would do a great job of soaking the skin oils out of the nylon. And it is safe on birds.

First thing is...don't use regular laundry detergent as it's too harsh on the materials and never, ever use the powdered stuff. Use Woolite (same as “gear wash” but much cheaper) instead. You could use the gentle wash cycle, but even better is to use either a large capacity front end loader (if you have zippers place a little duct tape on them) or just soak it in a five gallon pail.
I prefer the front end loader myself because it rinses really well and you don't want any residue of any kind left in the material. That's one reason Woolite is better...no residue, rinses out well and isn't as harsh on treatments\colors and materials.
Oh and hang dry most gear...low heat fluff dry the rest, if instructed to do so by manufacturer.
