my zing-it finally came in and i gave one of these a try. all went well other than the opening for the knot seems a little small (when it's all the way opened up).

And a side note to anybody using light colored line -- wash your hands

my once-yellow line is now a dirty gray/black where i was working with the splices, haha.

I tied up 3 of these after doing a soft shackle this evening. These were a bit more challenging than the soft shackle however they weren't all that difficult.

Still though I'll say that my finger tips don't agree with that statement!

Thanks again Opie! You're a fine man for sharing the craft!

    Opie,

Where do you get this from? The least amount I can find is 300ft. I don't think I'd ever need to use that much?

A "B" or high "E" metal guitar string works well, too. That's what I use.

I gotta say I love these pictoral threads from Opie... I got 180' of Lash-it in last week and have been working on a single ridgeline for my tarp (which I'm patiently waiting for ). At first I was planning on using soft-shackles to attach the tarp to prussiced loops. Now I can ditch the loops and just use these. They take a little fidgeting (as someone else mentioned, my opening or lock was a little small on the first one) but they are awesome. Can't wait to see how my tarp likes 'em. Nice job Opie!

And for anyone who feels nervous about splicing, give it a shot. If this noob can do it, anyone can. I'm actually surprised at how fun it is.

That's one of the things I like about this forum. A lot of DIY folks with a willingness to show what they have done.

Received my Lash-It today and made one of these handy things this evening.

    Thanks, opie.

Just got my roll of 2.2 mm Zing-It and had to try this. First one was a disaster, but I just wrote it off as stupidity. Second one seems functional, though not as pretty as Opie's. I can't wait to try one with the 1.75 mm Zing-it.

One thing I found difficult was using 12" length and 2" as my starting point. Maybe I screwed up the 1st one, but on the second one I used 13" and 2.5" as my starting point and also on the backsplice. It seemed to give me more bury and was easier to work with. This soft shackle Prusik seems pretty tiny and I wonder if I'll have enough length/diameter to attach tarp to ridgeline. I may go a little longer and use 14" length.

Right now I'm using a single strand of Cat 5e data cable doubled over as my splice tool. It seems to work fine for the Zing-It, though I may try the guitar wire. The thing I like about the Cat 5e is that, with the plastic jacket over the copper wire, there is no way you snag on strands. While the copper wire is not very stiff, you don't need stiff for making a soft shackle Prusik; none of the splices are very long so it's pretty easy to milk it through. If I was making an adjustable ridgeline whoopie from Zing-It, the Cat 5e might be more cumbersome. I'll have to try that soon. I've already tried the Cat 5e to make Amsteel Blue soft shackles. While not ideal, it gets the job done. And I have thousands of feet of Cat 5e laying around so the price is right.

Thanks Opie for a great tutorial! I'm a splicing fool now. How's my first try look?
