    waterproofing tarp

I water proofed my tarp with some Kwik stuff from Dicks Sporting Goods. I haven't really tested it. I sprayed it with a hose and no leaks. I took it out on a trip last weekend after being in a stuff sack for 4 months. There were wrinkles on it, and it looked like it was rubbing off where the creases where. Should I re-water proof it with the same stuff or is there a better product. The first stuff i used was from WM camping section.... That was horrible stuff. I would NOT recommend that stuff. Someone told me to get some stuff called Trek7?

    Thanks!

I'm a fan of McNett's Sil-Net for waterproofing the ridge of my tarp. It hasn't let me down yet. Others like to use silicone caulk thinned 50/50 with mineral spirits. There are plenty of products out there, just look around and see what you can find.

I use Permatex #81730 from the local autoparts store. Only a couple of dollars($2-$4) and one tube has sealed all three of my tarps.

Can anyone verify thats the correct part number?

Was that just for your RL? Im talking about the whole tarp. Or unless you diluted it in something?

What'd you make the tarp from that the anything besides the ridgeline needs waterproofing?

He's likely referring to the DIY silnylon method using standard ripstop nylon. Which is clear 100% silicone and mineral spirits in a 1:3 ratio by weight, IIRC.

I originally went on a quest to find silnylon at a WM. But only turned up look-a-like think ripstop. This rip stop that i got is thinner than the stuff you would get at a oh say joanns. I like it its strong and light, but not waterproof. So I seam sealed it, then got some water proofing junk from WM. That stuff just ran off onto my garage floor. SO i went to dicks and got some Kwik stuff. It seemed to work, until i pulled my tarp out of the stuff sack i made. Like i said where all the wrinkles are it seems the waterproof has rubbed off or something. I was going to put it up b4 it rained. But i didnt have time and it just stormed like crazy.... Neways i was going to originally going to do the 50/50 mineral spirits but for some reason decided against it...... I dont remember why. So i was just wondering if there was some really good stuff out there to water proof or re water proof my tarp? Or should i just try the 50/50 solution?

Has anyone ever tried lansinoh? It's used to waterproof wool diapers, and those gems get wet A LOT! I was thinking about using it for my tarp. All you have to do is fill the tub with really hot water, squeeze out a schmere, let it melt into the H2O, then dip the tarp in. It is basically liquid wax. ...and all natural. If any of you boys have kiddos, maybe the lady has some left over. It is a usual part of the 1st time breast feeding mom package.
