and now for something completely different...

Took a museum tour yesterday of the HMS Belfast, at anchor in the River Thames. A gunship that fought in WWII, later did service in the Arctic. Sailors slept in rope hammocks, lots of heavy wool blankets. There were a couple dozen hammocks hung on display, with some mannequins, and a hanging cat.

Alas, no more hammocks in the US Navy. In stead we sleep in coffins, at least on submarines.

    heh, cool cat.
It was probably the ships cat, and they gave it a hammock :P

And then it got stuffed o_O.

Hmm, I wonder my mother's cat, "Pat", could be taught to sleep in a hammock?

Surface fleet is no better my friend.

I always took the top bunk. No roof on my coffin and nobody stepped on my bed on the way to theirs.

My cat always jumps in my lap when I get in my hammock.

All the coffins had roofs for us squids. I took the middle rack, because it was what was given to me. Normally, that is reserved for more senior crew. Not sure how I lucked out on that. I was glad, because I kicked plenty of drunk people in the face walking to my rack. I am sure they felt that in the morning.

That's hilarious. My cats likes my hammock also but they have to sit on my belly. No claws on the material. I have wanted to make them a small hammock that hangs under a window so they can chill and look out the window.

    BTW,
I like Monty Python reference in the thread title. Wink wink nudge nudge.

I caught it, but decided not to say anything at the time. I'm waiting for the Ministry of Silly Walks thread...
