    my first whoopie sling

well i got my shipment of amsteel in and couldnt resist making a whoopie sling. i used a child sewing needle. that was the hardest part about it. there has got to be an easier tool to use. i did a loop at the end with a locking brummell and then burried the ends. amsteel is pretty cool stuff. its hard to believe it will hold 2500 lbs. so do these burries and loops take anything away from the strength. thanks to everyone for all the info and infecting me with the hammock bug. my wife thanks you as well.

There are several tools you can use. I find that a ballpoint bodkin works very well (available at a sewing store.)

It is cool stuff - an fun to work with. I show them off to my friends. Some of them find it interesting too. The splice does weaken the rope somewhat, but much less than a knot. I don't remember the numbers - they've been posted and are on the Amsteel website.

According to Samson, they originally rated the whoopie sling at 60% of the average break strength but more recent testing has put that figure at closer to 80%. See http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=12319 for the e-mail Knotty got from them on the subject.

I got mine from a forum member "WV", who is a awesome guy, and he use's one, and he's is quite the master at making sling's, you should see his hammock that he has made with tinny adjustable whoopie's at least two dozen (maybe more) on this hammock he made! Not sure what he used to make the tinny one's but the loop turner I got from him make's it a breeze when using amsteel!
