Hennessey Suspension and the Marlin Spike

Heading north this coming weekend on my first wilderness hammock outing I'm doing a three day solo canoe trip, and don't want to hit the hard Ontario granite with my tender backside.

My plan is to use the stock Hennessey suspension, but with a Marlin Spike Hitch (MSH) tied on the line. (Carabiner as the toggle) The line will run through the loops on the tree huggers. The video's I've seen of the MSH (Grizz's for example), tie a hitch in the webbing, then run the cord around the toggle and tie a second hitch in the line. Is the toggle in the webbing necessary? Will running through the loop on the strap be sufficient?

    Thanks for any help.

Running the cord through the loop will be secure enough but there is a danger when you have direct cord to webbing contact of the cord wearing away through the webbing or vice versa. Connecting cord to a webbing via a sheet bend is a little different but if the cord exerts force through the loop of the webbing then the cord could conceivably cut through the webbing with enough friction. This is the reason a rope thimble is used to prevent the cord from cutting through the webbing.

BTW where are you going on your canoe trip?

Thanks for the advice. I'm headed to a crown land area, just north of the Severn River. It's a small chain of lakes with great bass fishing, and few people.
