Too HOT To Hang???

I really really want to go hang myself (between two trees) but I feel that it would be too hot to sleep. With the temps here averaging around 90* during the day and 70* at night, wouldn't you sleep in your own sweat?

I need a trip to relieve some stress but the heat is killing me. In GA we also have to contend with the humidity which adds to the discomfort level, so how do you stay COOL? There are many threads on staying warm with the under/over quilts and that -to me at least- is easy to accomplish:

Layers
hot-water bottle
under quilts
good down sleeping bag
and so on.....

But what about keeping cool? I mean if you get cold, add layers, if you get too warm start taking off the layers...but once you get naked, there are no more layers.

What temp do y'all find is TOO HOT to hang.... or how do you keep cool during the summer time when you hang?

A damp rag waved it the air to cool it slightly, then apply to face/neck- mix an alcohol based cleanser with water and wipe on with bandanna- evaporates more easily than water, esp in high humidity. put tarp up to funnel breezes past you instead of around; have a quick rinse-off/sponge bath before bed.

Last year Ken, Jim and I went to what we call Camp Hobo in Linville Gorge. It was brutally hot and muggy. We went down to the river and I did a little swimming to cool off. No towel but went back up to my ENO ... with no UQ ... just the hammock and laid out in it wet ... now in short order the evaporation cooled me completely down and dried me off fairly well.

Fortunately the night was cool and enjoyable with a light weight bag and no additional insulation.

Those fans Shug mentioned are great ideas!

Just hanging near, or better over water, can make a big difference.

If you're starting from Atlanta, just head into the mountains to your north. There are a number of ways to keep cooler in the summer. While your hike won't be cool, you can camp cool. Just go to higher ground ( above 3500') or find a nice cool stream. When the lows here in Knoxville are in the high 60's at night, they can be closer to 50 higher up. If you combine some altitude with a stream in a hollow, you might actually find yourself being chilly.

If you want to try it out, Medicineman and I are looking at Citico/Slick Rock next month. Lots of examples of what I mentioned, and I think it's just a few hours drive for you.

I find hanging in Georgia this time of the year is the best. You don't have to worry about getting cold and the nights usually get down to comfortable temps. A few things I find helpful are:

Camping near water or if no water high elevations for a breeze.

A cool shower or dip right at dark to cool you off from the day's heat

I would need about ten of those fans being as hot-natured as I am... LOL...

I like the idea of hanging near water. Had not thought about that one. The place where we usually hang is right next to a stream so that should help.
