I much prefer the US Forest Service map, although their newest one has some errors. I've noticed most stores still have some of the previous one.

Ken, I had a really old Linville Gorge paper map (80's) that smelled a bit musty , so I recently picked up a new plasticized map. Are the errors major on the new map? Is there a thread on your site about the errors that I could review?

    Thanks!

Hi Salty. I haven't personally seen the new map. I've only heard others comment on it. One thing is that Cambric trail has been removed. There is no official word as to why. Also, there is a small loop shown in the Conley/Rockjock area that someone mentioned. I don't know if that's an error, or if the cartographer put in what we call "Lost Dog Loop" which is not official USFS trail, and wouldn't normally be on their map. Seems like there was one other thing someone said was drawn incorrectly, but I can't remember what it was. Our loca outfitter still doesn't have the new map, but when he gets it I'll have a look.

Having said all that, I think the map will work fine for you. Once on those official trails, you should have no trouble staying on them.

It turns out my plasticized map is the Forest Service from Nov 2009, and it has the loop on Rock Jock and no Cambric trail, so it appears to be the one you're talking about. That loop on Rock Jock is odd. At first glance, I thought it was Lost Dog, but it is further south than that. It's very near waypoint Split Rock (N35 52.694 W81 54.289).

Maybe the map maker sneezed when he was laying in that line!

That must be it. Hey, when are you and Ken going to meet me in the gorge and give me a GPS lesson? I just bought a used Garmin 60CSx here on the HF. I'm slowly but surely making progress with it.

Ha ... glad to do it any time ... might be a while for me though. For the next two months my ability to get in the gorge is going to be limited.
