Sorry to offend. It was a joke only to setup the fact that I've tested a short bury for almost 3 months straight with no problems. I would like to know why a 12" bury is desired. Is there some mathematical number that is the goal or is this considered "safe".

I am 5' 4" at 170lbs so a 3" bury may be sufficient for me, where for someone that is closer to 250lbs and 6' it would not be.

As long as you hang once you are a hanger.

The first time I tried to hang in my office I did it with a rotten sheet. Sheets do get rotten and sometimes it is hard to tell. When you get into for the first time though you immediately notice. Ripped right down the center dropping me on the middle bar known as the back breaker.

Nice tutorial opie! Put my first one of these together so I can stop using the anchor weights that are the stock steel biners that come with then eno doublenest. So far, they seem to hold just fine! Slick little piece of rope.

Ahhhh so great. I definitely snagged a few strands on my first splice (ever), but have since gotten 4 really nice looking shackles. Used a G string doubled over from an electric guitar and it worked like a charm.

My problem was the final backsplice. I was having trouble getting it so the frayed end you pull through was actually hidden inside, I kept having a tad bit hanging out.

When I tied the stopper knots, I definitely got the backsplice/gap between the two towards the very back of the knot. There's no real structural problem with a sub-par backsplice as long as the knot is positioned correctly...right?

Wohoo! I've made it! I'm now officially part of the DIY gang

A while back I ordered some Amsteel Blue and got started on the soft shackles Sunday. The first one didn't turn out too good, but the second one I'm more than pleased with. So after making two using this fantastic tutorial by opie, I got started on a different one, shown in this video. But I had a hard time getting the knot right, and the instructions when it came to lengths were harder to follow. So I'll stick to opie's in the future.

Now I just need to find something else to do with the dyneema

Great thread. Awesome way to loose the biners. I think I might make a few of these. Although, I probably will make them out of 1/8" AmSteel instead of 7/64" or maybe even 3/16" until I see some hard facts on its load strength for that setup. Sometimes I like to setup my hammock in some tricky spots. Would hate for one of these to fail. Hard fall with a long roll would be a bad thing to wake up to.

I don't think you have to worry about 7/64" soft shackle failing unless you are towing a truck. However, I like 1/8" Amsteel soft shackles a lot more because they're easier to open.
