Virginia Hangout

All the other states are having hangouts, so why not the Old Dominion. I'm proposing a simple weekend hangout or short weekend hike.

I know I'm only a few minutes from the Jacks, and another poster lives within 5 minutes of me. I've seen numerous posters from VA here, so lets get something organized.

Actually, there is already a Virginia hangout, every January for the past 4 years at the Wise Shelter just north of Mt Rogers.

But that isn't what you are talking about is it. I"m a 7 hr drive from there, but any excuse to go hiking in Virginia is a good excuse in my book. As long as it's on one of my long weekends I'm game.

Suggestion: Night 1 at the wise shelter, night 2 at the Old Orchard via the AT, night 3 at the Thomas knob via the AT & Pine Mt Trail. Then a moderate hike back to the cars day 4. Or some variation like that.
Park at AT access trail parking lot: night 1 Thomas knob, 2 Wise, 3 Old Orchard, 4 to cars VIa AT - Pine Mt Trail, Rhododendron trl.

Doctari I was thinking somewhere farther North. I'm back in tidewater for the summer, and I know we have a good number of folks in the DC,MD, NOVA area. I was thinking somewhere near harpers ferry or near Charlottesville.

MRWH covers some of the area you were talking about, and I think a good amount of us have hit the highlands. I haven't seen the Shenandoah for awhile.

Also some were talking about doing a local tidewater hang at york river state park or near there a while ago.

Most of my Va. journeys have been in the western part of the state and some local state parks.I haven't done any of the AT norh of the Peaks of Otter.I'd be interested in exploring some more of the Commonwealth.

I'm open to suggestions. My usual stomping grounds are Grayson Highlands to Damascus, so I'd really like to see some of what northern VA AT has to offer.

I am from NOVA and would definitely be interested if we could set something up in central/northern area. Mt Rogers is just too far away for me right now, but I'd love to join a hang.

I'm in Richmond and both me and my son (17) would be interested in a weekend hang. Drive time under 3 hours would be great.

hey I live in Chesapeake. Ive done a hike or two in the George washington national forest, im interested if something gets planned.
