    IX Summer Weight Top Quilt

I just completed my first quilt project. I wanted a light weight TQ for use late spring thru early fall here in the southeast. My goal was a TQ that keeps me comfortable to around 50*. I wanted a closed foot box but made it rather short to reduce condesation (thanks for the tip MacEntyre). I also wanted to create airspace between the layers of IX to trap air and increase warmth so I created baffles by making the top layer 1/2" longer between each baffle seam (you can see this in the photos below). I also cut the IX 1/2" wider than the bottom ripstop shell and then cut the outer ripstop shell another 1/2" wider than the IX to get more loft in the IX. I stitched all four layers (2 outer shells and 2 layers IX) just at the 1/4 points across the width w/ a short 1" seam to hold the outer shells in place. I did not want to sew all the way across the width of all four layer and compress the loft so this was a method I guessed at... We'll see how it does.

Size wise its bigger than I really need for a summer weight TQ but my though is that if I want I can always cut it down to make it smaller, but there is not such thing as a quilt stretcher so we see... It's 78" long x 48" wide with a 12" x 12" foot box 16" long. I covered and reinforced all seams and edges with 7/8" grosgrain. Total weight is 15.2 oz, considering I have been using my 3# sleeping bag as a TQ I will save 2# of pack weight.

    Here are the pics:

Looks really nice Dave! I've been stirring ideas for one of those around in my head for a while now. I need to get on it. Thanks for letting us see it.

The baffles and 1" stitches to keep it all in place - pure genius. Looking forward to hearing field test results.

Nice quilt Dave. What was your estimated cost of materials.

Not counting labor (because MYOG is fun and not really labor right...) my costs were less than $30.

    4.5 yds IX @$4 = $18
    4.4 yds WM ripstop @ $1.5 = $6.75
    7/8" grossgrain (estimated) = $2.00
    Thread (estimated) = $2.00

    Grand total: $28.75

I spent a total of about 6-7 hours making over a span of 5 days... It was good practice and the longer dimensions should help me get ready to attempt my first tarp...

    Very nice!

I love the boxed footbox. That is an excellent design. IX won't hold much of itself up, but it will hold up your footbox!

To clarify my advice, making the footbox short means that you cannot put more than your feet inside it, so you don't get condensation from insensible leg perspiration. I make long, tapered footboxes, but you can only get your ankles in them, and they extend far beyond your feet, with a drawstring at the end. The point is to enclose only your feet.

You should go to the head of the class, Dave!

    Is Insultex breathable?

Just wondering if Insultex is permeable or are you working with something similar to a vapor barrier?

Very nice. I thought I recognized that WM ripstop! I have a bunch of it! I've been sitting on about 9 yards of IX left... You've inspired me to do some more thread injecting!

I love the square footbox... looks nice and roomy for my big feet...

Re: sweaty legs: I suffer from cold feet, I'm thinking lightweight fleece or some wicking material in a longer footbox... Thoughts?
