I just completed my first quilt project. I wanted a light weight TQ for use late spring thru early fall here in the southeast. My goal was a TQ that keeps me comfortable to around 50*. I wanted a closed foot box but made it rather short to reduce condesation (thanks for the tip MacEntyre). I also wanted to create airspace between the layers of IX to trap air and increase warmth so I created baffles by making the top layer 1/2" longer between each baffle seam (you can see this in the photos below). I also cut the IX 1/2" wider than the bottom ripstop shell and then cut the outer ripstop shell another 1/2" wider than the IX to get more loft in the IX. I stitched all four layers (2 outer shells and 2 layers IX) just at the 1/4 points across the width w/ a short 1" seam to hold the outer shells in place. I did not want to sew all the way across the width of all four layer and compress the loft so this was a method I guessed at... We'll see how it does.
Size wise its bigger than I really need for a summer weight TQ but my though is that if I want I can always cut it down to make it smaller, but there is not such thing as a quilt stretcher so we see... It's 78" long x 48" wide with a 12" x 12" foot box 16" long. I covered and reinforced all seams and edges with 7/8" grosgrain. Total weight is 15.2 oz, considering I have been using my 3# sleeping bag as a TQ I will save 2# of pack weight.
