    At last... I have hung!

    Hi all

I have just got back from a canoe/hammocking trip.

We base camped at a lock by a canal, I had picked up a DD hammock and tarp the lunch time on the day that we left. I have never used either before.
I probably made all the obvious mistakes like hanging the hammock so high that I could not get into it etc

The canoeing was great as we had brilliant weather (by we I mean seven canoeists)

First night in the hammock was interesting, much more comfortable than I thought but my thermarest spent the night moving around leaving me with cold spots.

Night two one of the tent guys announced that he had an underquilt with him and would I like to borrow it. Did I!! oh yes.

Night two warm and cosy I slept like a log for nine hours

I am now fully converted to hammocking but I need an underquilt, can't afford one so I will have to improvise.

    My untidy set up

Nice site. That row of trees is perfect for a whole line of hammocks!

At one stage we had four hammocks up :-)

There was some bouncing when people turned over in their sleep, one turned over and another one or two gently bounced and swayed :-)

The trees have been planted for a maker of cricket bats so they will come down one day soon :-(

Not something you hear very often...a tenter with an UQ.

Glad you had a good time. Oh, and that is one BIG tarp. That's beauty of canoe camping, you don't have to carry it.

The tenter had a tent, hammock and his wife.... he preferred the tent and wife option this trip :-)

    The Tarp is a DD XL 3x4.5 or 10ft x 14ft ish

Canoes are great for loads, until a portage!

Glad you were smart enough to use the thermarest the first night! My first night I froze my butt off!

RE: UQ: for warm weather, some have used a cheap ($20) poncho liner...

Others have made their own UQs. If you, or someone you can bribe can sew, it's not a big deal to make a rectangle quilt from $40 in materials. Since you're canoeing, compressibility is less of an issue. LOTS of options out there, dig through the DIY section! Welcome to the addiction!

Others stick with pads, though I'm told: once you go Underquilt, you'll never go back...
