    Noob TQ question

Okay, so my title says it all, I'm a noob, and I have a question. I am thinking about making a TQ for me and one for my girlfriend. I am 6'5" and she is 5'5". How long should i make the quilts? I am wanting to add a footbox to them. Any suggestions for material? I was looking at climashield for the insulation...

    Thanks for any information!

I will make my next one as long as I am tall. Made my last one about four inches longer and it's too long.

Climashield 5oz works for me down to 30ish depending on wind and humidity.

For fabric, I'd buy some from sclittlefield... he has 1.1oz ripstop nylon 2nds (almost unnoticeable gray line in the fabric) for cheap... I think he has camo, too.

I made a TQ and a hammock out of it... good stuff...

If you go to thru-hiker.com, momentum 90 is supposed to be THE material to use... it all depends on what you're looking for: Cheap and works, or top quality...

I haven't tried climashield but Pertex Quantum is really comfortable and lightweight too.

funny thing about those foot boxes.... I found I liked and had to have one in my winter quilt to keep my feet warm. But in my summer quilt, I found that I didn't like it and prefer that quilt to be flat. Since I made both of my quilts, I was able to sew the winter quilt together and I put a drawstring at the foot of my summer quilt (for that "just in case" situation). Both my top quilts are down. I did try climashield in my summer bottom quilt and found it super easy to work with and it turned out nice. I use it in temps rangeing from about 45 to 75. I also made a winter climashield bottom quilt but found it didn't pack up well at all. I sold it to a friend of mine that only does car camping. This quilt was also very easy to make, the climashield is easy to work with, I did have to hand sew the climashield middle layers together so they wouldn't shift around. The edges of the quilt were all machine sewn.

If you can use a sewing machine...just jump in and make the Down quilts...there not hard to make ..just take your time

Paul over at AHE has 6oz Climashield for sale at a really good price
that would get you down around 30 degrees if you are dead set on synth quilts...can also get your thread from him too

also talk to Stormcrow...he has some Camo ripstop at a really good price as well
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

Grab a bedsheet, form a footbox with those big binder clip thingies from office depot, lay under it, and fold the top over until it feels like it's the right length. Make sure you check it for both back and side sleeping position.

And then make it two inches longer. Having to choose between a cold neck and cold toes SUCKS.
