    Making Tree Huggers

Im getting ready to make a couple pairs of tree huggers and I cant figure out how the loops are supposed to be sewn in. I was planning on setting it to a zig-zag stitch and doing a box with an X inside. any tips? i did a quick search and nothing really came up. i just dont want my stitching to be weak and have the whole thing break on me.
    thanks in advance

8-10 zig zags will work 2-3 box-X stitches will work or a combination of both will work. Box X is supposed to be stronger but I have had someone with some lab time say that a handful of zig zags held over 1000 pounds.

Pages 12-15 of this link will tell you more than most people want to know about stitching loops in webbing.

Nice read OG. I've seen and used both. Ed Speer's book says to use 4 (I think) bartacks (overlapping zigzags). I've also used 2 square box-X-stitches. So far, I've stayed off the ground...

except for that time I sat in my UQ instead of my hammock... Good thing I was hanging over concrete...

The zig zag is not absolutely required. It makes people feel like it is safer but the commercial loops are not zig zagged. Mutiple passes on a couple of bar tacks finished out with some good stitching to make the box and the "X" are plenty strong for me. I'm a chunky dude too.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I neglected to give credit for the link...came out of Albert Skye's article on tree huggers. My bad. Sorry, Albert.

I use 4 bartacks on the ones I sell.

2 hold me fine at 275#.

Testing I did for Warbonnetguy showed the stitches are stronger then the webbing. I cant remember how many he used on the test pieces he sent, but they all failed right about at the middle of the pieces. The stitching stayed intact.

Disclaimer: on the stitches he used.

I use two overlapping Box-Xs on each loop, with a straight stitch.

I used satin-stitch box/x. Definite overkill, but I didn't know better at the time!
