I like the Y stakes because they seem to hold better than shephards hooks. Jacks R' Better sells Vargo Titanium Ascent Y stakes (0.3 oz, 6.25" long) for $3.95 each. They sell them individually. I have four that I use on my tarp and I really like them. I've used the Ultralight Titanium shephards hooks and they just don't hold in soft soil.

I just made the switch from my old cheap wire stakes to MSR Groundhogs. I used them on my trip to RRG this weekend and they work GREAT! I'm seriously considering doing like Cerberus and putting a Figure 9 on the cord of each one for ease of attachment/adjustment. Seems like a good idea to me.

I recently got a set of Titanium Goat carbon fiber stakes...super light, unbendable, and big, much lighter and tougher than the BPL ti stakes I was using...I don't have any long term experience with them though. You can definitely pound them in or use your foot in hard ground. Check out TitaniumGoat.com, they're super nice guys who really go out of their way to give good service.

I've been using the MSR Groundhogs, too, for a while.

I have several different kinds. My two favorites are the A.G. Russell CIA Letter openers

    http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_m...ther_item.html

    and the Titantium Nails.

Both are indestructible. I use the letter openers in softer soils where the nail isn't needed since they hold better when used sideways.

The A.G. Russell CIA letter openers weigh 0.75 oz each and the nails are 0.45 oz each.

I usually only carry one nail and use that to drive a hole for the regular Titanium stakes. I swear that nail can be driven through solid rock and hardly scratch it.

The MSR Groundhogs are the best stake I have come across. I have to pound the daylights out of them to get them into the rocky soil where I camp regularly for Boy Scout leader training, and not one of them even has the smallest mark on it from that abuse. They come with a little loop of cord on them that has reflective threads in it, so I can always leverage them out if they're stuck.

My favorites for my tarp tents became the stakes of choice for the new MacCat too. Simon Metals Titanium Needle stakes.

Well, I did it. I bought some Figure 9's today, enough to go on each Groundhog stake. This will make adjustment and attachment very quick and easy for a minimal weight penalty. I'm going backpacking with Doc next weekend in NC, so I'll make sure I mention how they did in my trip report.
