    DIY IX Underquilt

Finally got around to making an underquilt out of the IX I bought from Mac ages ago, this is what came of it:

It's two layers of IX sandwiched in a wally world nylon shell. We'll see how warm it keeps me. I hung in my hammock with it under me for a few minutes today and could definitely notice the warmth, but that's not saying much being as it was in the 60's today.

I originally just had some shock cord running to the ends of my hammock to act as the support, but I was getting more sag at the head and foot then I wanted, so I just ran another piece through the corner loops and hung it over the ridgeline and this is what the final product came to be:

The project cost was loosely the following:

    14 feet of IX: ~ $24
    14 feet nylon: ~ $7
    19 feet Grosgrain: ~ $4
    6ish feet shock cord: ~ $2

Total is right around $37 bucks plus around 5 or 6 hours of time.

This synthetic was definitely the way to go for my first quilt, I can only imagine how much easier IX is to work with than down (it's really easy).

There were a few flaws in the design/execution, but I'm only planning on divulging that information if i find that it effects the function of the quilt.

Only thing i've noticed from my initial test is that the layers past the inner shell don't hang with as much slack as I had hoped -- but it should still be warm. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

All right, looks like a good job on the 1st attempt at a quilt! Re: the IX not hanging as loose as you had hoped- did you attempt to do any kind of differential cut/layering by making the outer layers progressively wider than the inner layers?

yeah. each layer is two inches longer and two inches wider than the one above it. so there is a 6 inch difference between the top and the bottom shell. when it's layed out flat, that seems like a lot --- but once it's hung it's not all that much.

Also -- it's darted as well -- so the outter shell was 7' by 4' darted down to 6' by 3'. Each layer 'inside' that is two inches shorter and two inches narrower but still darted down to the 6' by 3' size.

thanks! It will get the real test of whether or not it worked next weekend when i take it up to 10000+ feet. Temperatures should be in the high 30's / low 40's.

    Looks good!
Course, it must still prove itself, but I bet it passes the test with ease. Way to tackle your first UQ build.

That looks real nice. And can't beat the price. What's it weigh and how small does it pack?

Firstly, thanks for the positive feedback!

I don't have any exact numbers, but I used our scale (the kind you weigh yourself on) says it's right around 24 ounces, which seems pretty close to right where it should be from my brief number crunching.

In the bag I put it in, its a little bigger than a gallon-jug

But if I had it in a compression bag it could easily go smaller (I can get it down to almost half that size by just squeezing it with my hands)
