Poncho, adapted for undercover use

No sil nylon? On a second thought, that makes sense. It feels quite slick to the touch, but isnt so horribly noisy. I have other ponchos and its always a mixed bag. tjhe pu-coated ones are heavy and the sil-coated ones far too noisy.
Looking not happy? Well, a bit grumpy, maybe
I will use this poncho together with a cheap 28oz poncho liner as underquilt, until my order from JRB arrives.
Then it will be used solely when I am out with the kids, they wreck everything, you know

What's the weight of the silnylon one is it the same as the one Sgt. Rock posted?
This makes me wonder if the new one I purchased a while ago is silnylon, gotta go check. It did feel pretty light.
Let us know what kind of temps you can end up going down to. This is a very economical dual purpose alternative to underquilt with single purpose. By the way great find!

Love the idea!

I am always searching ways to reduce weight and I also use a poncho/tarp to cover my hammock, so I am curious, any issues/problems with vapor/moisture barriers?

I found this Poncho on top of a heap of trash and, of course, had to take it with me




Sil-nylon, for free, and only in need of some soap

I cut some holes in the channels on the small sides and melted the fringes with a match. Than a piece of thin cord was threaded through all of them. The cord is tied to the matal rings at the corners. In the middle it is threaded through the ring and a key ring and a toggle are attatched.






When spread out, the cord completely dissappears in the nylon tunnel, only the toggle is potruding.
I can pull it together with this and it looks like this


It the wraps around the lower part of the hammock and, with a cheap poncho linerattatched inside, is plenty warm for autumnal nights.

Since the liner cost only € 20,- and its slit for the head is homemade, this is a nice and cheap way to have a warm back.

Inexpensive but not light.... Standard US Army poncho will come in at 22 oz and a poncho liner is also 22 oz..... with 550 cord and locks figure 45 oz total or almost 3 lbs.... the gripe GIs have had for the individual load weight for years.

Camo.... Neo should like it.

They don't make a Sil version of this as in silnylon they make a silcoated vs. the old PU coated version. Both have the same probelm they flake after time. Silcoated should be a little lighter though not much. It's on my project list to make one of these out of silnylon sometime with in the next decade. But I do carry one for my rain gear weight is 600 grams not sure about the conversion to ounces. Mines olive drab!

I also spent a long 13 months living in one of these in Nam. Not good associations for me, here are a couple of thoughts:
1. I would rather have a cover for my underquilt made of PWR rather than something that doesn't breath, do you think?
2. Does Clark make a silnylon CAMO tarp? They advertize a silnylon tarp on all their stuff, then, for a lot more money, a Camo version of the package. ??

Finally sat down last night with my Campmor/Equinox silnyl poncho and performed similar surgery on it so the ends can be snugged up easily. Thanks for the idea.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but, I really like this idea. First off it's cheap (as I already own a USGI poncho and liner) and secondly the poncho is a very useful item to have with you when camping/hiking anyway. Sure, the poncho and liner combo is a bit heavy, but a lot of people already own them so no more gear has to be bought.

Oetzi - I like the hot pink cord and purple cord-locks you used on your
project. Very tactical.

Hector - do you think your Campmor poncho can handle stresses of this set up? Have you had a chance to try out your work yet?

I've used it under the hammock before, just tying it up haphazardly. No problems. There's a photo of it somewhere in the forums. But I now can use his simple method to zip the ends of the poncho together to fit the hammock's shape in a matter of seconds.
