I think with using a very ligthweight fabric problems will only arise when the stitching is bad.
Its very important to keep an adequate distance between the holes. Check the other factory-made seams and duplicate the distances. when reinforcedment stitches are done, they shouldnt be zi-zagged all over the place, but placed regularly.
I own a ultra leightweight Silnylon Poncho from Sea-to-Summit and will convert it the same way without worrying about its strenght.
I appreciate yall bringing this thread back up...I've just purchased a liner from Ebay and have bids on two ponchos!...I should have them by the end of next week! I'll get my mods done and post photos.

Another 'don't leave home without it' item for me. It's not a single use item. That's why the weight is reasonable, for me. Yes there are lighter ponchos out there, but this guy seems to work best, for me. Sure it's not the lightest article in the arsenal of gear, but collectively it is, replacing alot of other gear. Which actually makes my load lighter. Replaces tarp(8oz), raincoat(8oz), bivvy(16oz+), pack cover(6oz), etc. To each is own.

I finally got around to doing something for an underquilt but simply went with a poncho liner. I ran shock cord through the end like you guys did with the poncho and used another poncho liner for a blanket. It works great but, I'm a warm weather hanger. Kept me warm down to high 30's and I slept great! I think this will work great for me it's very economical. Paid $10 for 3 poncho liners on ebay they were all in good used condition and suit my needs. Just thought I'ld share.

ok, I have a few Dutch hammocks...very little sewing skills, and I was debating going at one of them to try and build an UQP. THEN, I did some more research, and found this thread. Whooo Buddy. I'm excited. I have a few Sea to Summit ponchos gathering dust...I love this idea. I will be following your plans to adjust and try it out this weekend.
