    Daniel Ridge Loop Hike

I sent The Hangin' Burrito a PM late Friday night letting him know that I'd be hiking the Daniel Ridge Loop
Saturday morning and invited him to come along with me.

Saturday morning he called me and said that he'd ask for a kitchen pass when Mama Bear got up.

Well 8AM rolled by so I called back for an update and he told me she was still sleeping
To this I said, (quoting HB himself) "Sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask permission. Leave a note!" ...
He said he'd have to call me back.... At 9AM I got a call from HB - On the road to my house. He'd left a note

OMG. If I were implicated in this, I'd be a grease spot by sundown

We hit the trail and hiked up to the base of the Daniel Ridge falls.

    A little Cairne

We continued up the trail and met some nice folks hiking the loop clockwise and saw some interesting fungi.

This thing was as big as a pizza pie!

We stopped for lunch around 2PM. HB brought along his J Falk WBS and I had my trusty
Crumb Catcher alcohol stove and Heiney Pot with me.
Of course a few celebratory servesas were in order.

When HB opened his brew it popped like a shotgun and cut his face.
After ricocheting off his face this cap still had a 'hang time' of 2 seconds or more

A bunch of mountain bikers went by as we ate lunch. I was duly impressed.
This trail gets very narrow at points with a 200' fall for any mistakes.
Three women went by wearing team colors and one of them crashed just out of sight.
Hearing the crash, I ran over, and asked if she was OK.
To this she replied, "Yeah, just being lame." hopped back on the bike and off she went.
That's the kind of woman you want on your side in a fight

    Some kewl waterfalls

    Funky trees

    Neat old bridge

Guess it's in need of some repair?

It was another 1.5 miles back to the trailhead where we noted numerous spots for an upcoming, to be announced, overnight hang

All in all - A most excellent day in the Piney Woods - Whooo Buddddy

    Thanks for viewing.

Tough to see, as the photo doesn't capture it well, but there is a 'ramp' on the near side in the photo

I'll be there to take pictures

    Great pictures!

    I love that area.
I've camped with the scouts at Cove Creek right there at one of the Daniel Ridge access points.

We would hike that one and the Caney Bottom Loop. Here is a screen shot from my GPS.
Daniel Ridge is the red trail, Caney Bottom is the black

You go through a locked gate a mile deep into the Pisgah Forest and it opens up into this huge field. This would be a great place for a group hang. Two vault toilets, well pump for water, big fire ring, and two creeks, at $95 night for the group.

Here is the Cove Creek Waterfalls, 15 minute hike from the camp on the Caney Bottom Loop

The last time I camped there, I had just started hanging. They thought I was just going through a fad.

I scoped it out Shug. The side I shot the pic from has a long downhill to the 'ramp' but the last few feet were a bit muddy which might rob you of valuable hang time

(I would however help in the construction of an improved ramp )

Swampfox, I've been drooling over this area for a while. Great pics. Now I HAVE to go back soon.

Is that screen shot from your GPS or mapsource?

Good report RF. Yeah, that was a fun day, good hiking, fair weather, burning little sticks, tasty lunch, dangerous beer bottles, mountain bikers crashing, and trails with no bridges! Doesn't get better than that!

There are some excellent places to make camp along the river. I do believe a future hang is in order.(or at least another recon trip. )

    Running Feather,

That is a great area. There is so much to do and see around Brevard.
    Looking Glass Rock Trail
    Looking Glass Falls
Sliding Rock (57 degrees year round)
    Dupont Forest (Multiple waterfalls)
    Cradle of Forestry
    Pink Beds Loop
    Graveyard Fields
    Devil's Courthouse
camping, hiking, mtn. biking, flyfishing, rafting... the list goes on and on.

That screenshot was some tracks I saved in my GPS (Garmin eTrex Vista HcX) uploaded to Mapsource Topo US.

It's good to see so many folks got out over the weekend. I'll have to watch the next time I open a Fat Tire Ale!
