Miguel: Thanks for the info and pictures - the 24" inch walmart eggcrate or waffle pad as you called it was going to be used for my final version - but I was going to splurge for two of them and cut one for the wings. Did you use the $5 blue pad as wings for any special reason?

Not to change the topic, but I have been thinking about a SPE and I am curious about how cold has anyone slept with just pads? I have only camped in the summer with my new HH and am looking forward to going out again soon.

I've been down to 10 degrees with and SPE and 3 pads inserted inside. 1 3/8" total thickness. 2 Wally World 3/8 pads plus 1 Thermarest Ridgerest 5/8
I had a total of 4 wings at 3/8"

No particular reason other than I had it lying around. It's actually some 3/8" which I figure is thick enough for what I do. BTW...if you or anyone else does it my way, it's good to duct tape the pieces together first on the opposite side, while you are trying to glue on the wings. It stabalises it nicely.
