pizza, you are blessed to see a wolf up close in a wild environment. Couple decades of living among the wolves and only one close face to face experience. Routinely hear them, see their tracks and scat. Rarely see them.

One season racing up at Giant's Ridge (Biwabik area) on the second lap of a 30km classic event we had a fresh steaming pile right in the tracks that was not there the 1st lap. Wolf was somewhere close but like most times not wanting us to see it.

I'm trying to figure out what would make a wolf act that way. At first I thought something might be chasing the wolf which is why it came out the first time. But then to come back out a second time. I'm wondering if it was a mom looking for pups or just Pizza for lunch?

Probably curiosity...but then again, Pizza is an all-round great guy, so an autograph-seeker, maybe???

I've been reading Jack London's "White Fang" in the summer heat. Recommended, but not when you're staring down a wolf!

    thanks for the story

I was thinking maybe some pups near bay and was making sure Pizza wasn't a threat. But then again I know nothing about the behavior of wolves. Sweet story and experience though!

I'm drawn to the open country. Its where the world makes the most sense. When I put myself out there I always return with something new.

Any pictures from the SCUBA dive? Those mines/quarries are chilly, but neat to see.
