    SPE (homemade edition)

A few people on the forum have mentioned the use of a SPE over just a normal CCF pad. I've never used a CCF pad in my hammock yet, but just from research it sounds like an SPE is a better decision.

I have searched the forum and haven't really found anything. If you helpful guys could point me in the right direction towards how I can make my own SPE that would very helpful.

    Thanks in advance, appreciate it

    P.S. What's a DWR?

The CCF pad is fine but most are around 20" which is not wide enough for most hammocks. The Speer style hammocks will wrap around your shoulders so you need a wider pad for your main body area. The SPE makes it easier to add the additional wings and keeps everything together. You can do something as simple as putting duct tape on the back side to attach the wings and try before making a specialized SPE.

I only have one CCF pad and it is 24in wide and as long as my body. (6ft) I purchased it from Fred Meyers (if you know what that is) and I believe it is a little thiner than the walmart CCF.

Should I simply just buy another pad and tape it on to widen at my shoulders?

FYI. If I do any backpacking in the near future, it will be in rather cold conditions 30's most likely. I don't know if this means I need to do more work or make this thing any different. "Thing" being my insulation were talking about

The pads are fairly cheap. You can cut out wings to attach from the shoulder to hip area. Test in the backyard in the same temps you plan to use. When you get the size you need you can make a SPE that fits your setup. The tape will work to make sure you like it before spending time sewing up a SPE

I wish! Don't have a backyard, no trees no nothing. I could just go down to the local park and test. Would look rather ridiculous amongst the joggers and kids running around, ah ha ha ha.

It's a nice enough kiddy park to be in the middle of an urban area. From the right person I would look cool
