Hey everyone...I created a poll to see where everyone lives. Go vote on the cluster your state is in, and that will make it easy to figure out a central location.

One more thought - I think we should we pick a drive-in campsite so folks can test new setups but still have a reliable bail-out plan. But I'm good hiking in too if that's what y'all want.

Oh - and I posted a notice at Yahoo with a link to these threads.

Good point Jeff. I would like to hike, but I do not want to do anything that would jeopardize saftey.

If we go somewhere on the AT, we could hike up close to a shelter. The shelter wouldn't be as good of a bail out as a car with more gear. But it is better than nothing.

Well, even if it's a short hike folks can bring extra bail-out gear in addition to testing their winter hammocks. Guess it depends on where we go and what's available.

Ok...sure you have to test it, but lets get this staight.....

One needs to be able to pack in/out one's winter rig or it is not viable as a winter hiking hammock system...Testing should be done before the "Winter Hang Out".... if I can get my single digit system in a 2200 ci pack Im sure that with a larger pack all of your systems and even some back up/ bail out stuff can be packed in.... let hang in some beautiful spot without the cars...

    Still voting for MT Rogers.

I agree with you Pan - but how many of us have a viable, hikeable winter system? I don't want to leave out half the people b/c they haven't had the chance to test their systems before the campout.

So I guess we should figure out how many people would go if we hike vs drive. I'm good either way. I'll start another poll...

My long weekend is Jan 11 - 14.

    ALso: Feb 1 - 5.

I have always wanted to go to Red River Gorge. The rents honeymooned there 55+ years ago.

Another vote for the Grayson Highlands / Mt. Rogers area. I saw several places you could drive and/or short hike to when I did my 20 miles a couple months ago. It'll be DAMNED cold though!

It would have to be on the West Coast for me. I'll be doing my own cold weather tests on Mt. San Jacinto above Palm Springs. I got my Speer PeaPod with a total of 5 ounces of overfill, so I want to see how low I can go with that.

    Best, Todd.
