I can't remember if I read something that said the distance from the tree to your hammock should be 17inches. Am I mistaken or this a recommend procedure
When I use my hammock the only thing I really pay attention too is making the rope distance (from my hammock to the tree) equal on both sides.
I guess that would depend on the suspension. I'd like to have more room than 17".

So it doesn't matter if say the ends of your hammock is practically touching the tree?

No, I meant the other way around.
I prefer to have plenty of seperation between the hammock and the tree (I have squirrel issues at home). It just makes it easier to get things adjusted IMO. I use rings and buckles on my hammocks and need the space, the HH lashing method wouldn't matter as much I guess.
So should I try to avoid trees that don't give much space and find ones spaced out more?
It doesn't really matter - I've had my hammocks right against the tree before. Having enough room to hang the tarp correctly is more important if rain is possible, though...if you can hang your tarp tightly, you'll have plenty of room for the hammock underneath.
But I do find it's more comfortable if I have about 2' between the end of the hammock and the tree...the hammocks lays a bit different. Plus that lets me swing myself to sleep!

Okie dokie, if I have the time I'll try different lengths.
With my webbing and cinch buckles for example, if there is some bushes or briars, etc. under one end of the hammock, I'll just adjust the hammock accordingly to avoid contact with said objects.

If you hang your hammock off center between two trees you will need to adjust the height of the longer end so that your hammock hangs right unless you are putting max tension on your suspension.
