    Portable hammock stand

At Boy Scout camp in June on day 3 the camp officials said I had to take down my hammock because they "stress the trees," so I dutifully moved to a canvas tent (it was fine, but the hammock would have been better).

Upon my return I resolved to find a way to hang at camp next year. Pictured below is the result: My "portable" hammock stand. It cost about $15 to make and it mostly works.

    The parts:
    - One 10-foot piece of 1" aluminum electrical conduit, cut in half
    - Four 1/4" eye bolts with wing nuts
    - Four whoopie slings that I made yesterday
    - Four 12" landscape nails

The pictures show the configuration. There is a stake under each pole that prevents slipping. Four whoopie slings anchor the poles.

    - Pros: It really is portable. It really does support me in the hammock. It is stable. It was cheap to make.

    - Cons: I need much better stakes. Had to find very good ground or the stakes pulled out. It is hard to set up (takes two people).

There you go. I'd love to hear any suggestions on appropriate stakes that won't abrade the amsteel slings.

My kids can hang in the same hammock and not pull one out....I however, cannot.

All have their issues, and benefits.

Yep, that kind of thing pulls hard on any stakes used. I hope you get something worked out... & I'm sure you will.
That sure is a bummer about the leaders asking you to take it down because it "stresses the trees".
I too will something make and joy in it's making

You need stakes that grab into the ground. Spikes or nails seem to be too smooth the resist the forces that you apply.
    What's your weight?
    Just for reference.

The canopy stakes are the sort of thing I was thinking about.
You'll need a conduit piece or rebar of sorts to assist with screwing them into the ground. Bar into stake top to turn it.

Ah, man! I'd hate to hear that. I'm leaving for summer camp in the morning with 3 hammocks. I was wondering what their policy might be (different at each camp I suppose, but I could easily see some sort of "camp standard" as this becomes more popular). It would be ironic in my case because it was one of the camp commissioners last year, on his daily camp inspection, that turned me on to hammocks (HH).

I was in the camping section today and saw these ginormous Coleman steel stakes that you would need a sledge hammer to pound in. I laughed to myself, "glad I'd never have a need for THOSE." Now perhaps, I wish I'd bought them.

Those stakes you have to auger in are more likely to cause damage if there are any tree roots. Good luck getting them in if the ground is compacted like state parks. I'm picturing hammockers with gasoline powered ice auger machines setting up camp. Can you imagine leaving behind a bunch of "gopher holes"?? So much for LNT.

Excuse my rant, if those scout masters are going to say that a hammock hung correctly will stress the tree, then they better cancel their scout camp because all those tents and little feet trampling all over will stress the ground even worse!

I used to build ropes courses around the country and at MANY scout camps for their adventure programs... compared to hanging a hammock, they authorized us to literally butcher many trees to serve their purposes. Just look at the Pioneer projects that scouts do for tent stakes... they had to cut those branches from somewhere!

sorry, I had to get that off.
