    My first overnight hang

Did my first over night hang Saturday night (wife had to work so she could not go). Set up off the Neusiok Trail along the Neuse River (www.neusioktrail.org). Since I was just spending the night I did not take any food, just the hammock ect and just barely got everything into my daypack. First real chance to try out my new Black Bird 1.7 double.

I had talked to another hanger who had suggested an area along the trail to check out. Found a couple trees a few feet from the river and decided to set up. Set up my hammock so I was parallel to the river. The Live Oak tree I used as one attachment point had several sawed off limbs that made great hanging points for my day pack and other junk.

I used Dutch Clips and those clips are easy to use and work. As the night was clear I decided not to set up the tarp I had brought.

Had some great views of the fireworks while I was in the hammock. Even saw some shooting stars later that night. The tree frogs were doing their best to keep me entertained with their music. About 11pm I heard some voices and a few minutes later a boat came by with several people out flounder gigging. One person on the boat was shinning his spot light into the trees and spotted my camp. He told the others that there was a hammock up there and the others shined their lights on my hammock discussing if there was anyone camping out. I yelled at them that their lights were bright but I don’t think they heard me over the outboard engine. After a couple of minutes they continued on and I went back to sleep.

I was worried that I might be too warm as the weather has been in the high 90’s low 100’s and super high humidity for the last couple of weeks but a couple of days ago the temps dropped to the 80’s. I did not take a sleeping pad as the night time temps were only suppose to get into the 70’s. I did take my trusty poncho liner that I have used for many years. About 3 am I woke up very cold and checked my travel alarm clock temp and found out it was 53 degrees. I put on my t-shirt and went back to sleep.

Got up about 6:30 and broke down camp and went home to fix breakfast.

    After action report:
-I am now officially a hanger
-Need to take a sleeping pad in the future for bottom insulation.
-I was very comfortable in the hammock but I still have to tweak the tension as I believe I had the suspension a little too tight.
    -Dutch Clips work great
-Have to get a larger back pack
-Checking my calender to see when I can go back out

Nice! I love the flag! Too bad about the interruption. Some people just don't have a clue.

Thats what make camping and hiking trips interesting. How many hangers can say they were distrubed at night by flounder fishermen in a boat.

Wow, they were off by 20* on the forecast vs the actual lows? Anyway, you made it and learned bit about how the need to keep the bottom warm in a hammock!

The Neusiok Trail would make a great place to hang. Backpacking hammocks were in their infancy when I was hiking that trail while in the Marine Corps. But it is a great mix of forest and river types.

Congratulations on your first hang and go spend some quality time on the trail!

Must be a good weekend for "Firsts". I made it though my inaugural hang last night (Sunday) with great results. I had to make due with my front yard, from the pictures, your location looked excellent! All the talk I have heard over the years about waking up under only a tarp to see the world rang true for me. I watched the sun rise over High Peak ( it's not really that high) with just the birds, squirrels and rabbits. Not bad company!

My wife met me at the door when I finally came in for coffee and eggs and laughed at the big grin on my face. No soreness, stiffness or feeling like I had been dipped in mayonnaise from sleeping in a stuffy tent.

    Life changing, dude.

Congrats to you, hope to meet ya sometime.
