Tarp Question?

I've been practice-hangin' in the yard with my WBBB & Superfly and I am curious as to why all of the tarps I see have the ridgeline running down the middle? The reason I ask is that the BB only opens on one side. Wouldn't it make more sense to have the ridgeline, for example, at the 3/8 point, giving 5/8 of space for maneuvering in and around the open side of the hammock?

I know the tarp would need to be pitched steeper on the closed side of the hammock to maintain the same ridgeline height but since I do not use that side I'm not losing any space.

Is there something I'm not considering?

You're points are valid. I think the center ridgeline is to provide maximum coverage for a given sized tarp. The hammock is easy enough to push to one side when maneuvering around it.

Plus when in the hammock you're centered to the space. If you want it opens up more to one side you can elevate that side of the tarp with the tie outs or the use of support poles. Of course a custom tarp either DIY or one of the venders like Gargoyle that do custom tarps is another possible option if you want to go for it.

The way you hang the tarp and hammock can make a considerable difference. Their ridgelines can be offset by the width of the trees you're hanging from.

Also, the ridgeline is where you decide to put it...sew on a couple of webbing loops, or get some GripClips, and experiment. The larger tarps, like the Guide Gear 12x12 lend them selves to this especially well. You can have a really nice "porch."

Well, I think I may have found my first DIY project—just need find some material, a sewing machine, and the skill to use it.

Seriously though, it's not a big deal just a curiosity. I'm very happy with my set up, so far. I think maybe I'm just getting that tinkering bug that been going around.
